Going French

There are many countries in the world we live in, each with its unique people and cultural values. While some of these countries are popular and well known for their cultural heritage: their language; their festivals and holidays; their food, some others are not so popular. Acculturation, which involves learning and adopting the behavioral pattern of a culture different from ours can be all fun and exciting which is why the Pearl Club had it as one of its weekly programmes. The aims of the exercise was to expose the girls to one of the richest and intriguing cultures of the world and its theme was "Going French".

The acculturation exercise ran for one week, ending with a grand finale that Saturday. The following Activities were lined up in the programme:

• Online Cooking:

Via the Pearl Club online platform and Google classroom, the girls were sent a recipe together with a short video on how to prepare "Ratatouille", a popular healthy French dish. The dish is gluten-free and is made with vegetables such as zucchini and egg plant, with spices such as capsicum, curry powder, bay leaf and basil. “l’ingrédient spécial” the special ingredient is the French red wine. How exciting!

The girls were extremely amazed and responded enthusiastically, each of them at different times enquiring about how best to produce this interesting dish.

• The Movie “Ratatouille”:

Ratatouille is an animated comedy about a rat, Remy that aspires to become a renowned French chef. Being that people despise rodents, it becomes really difficult to achieve this feat. Remy eventually actualizes its dream after it is made to prepare the very tasty Ratatouille dish for a famous food judge. The movie was sent to the girls to inspire them and get them in “the cooking mood". Although some of them had already seen it, they didn't mind seeing it again as it helped them with their dish.

• A resource material that covered different aspects of the lives of the french people was sent to the girls to get them ready for the grand finale.

Saturday arrived, the event held virtually on zoom. Ruby (for primary school girls), Jade vine and Sea pink girls (junior and senior secondary school girls) met at different times respectively  for the eye-popping presentation "Going French"  by Ms. Udeachara Amarachi. The presentation focused on France and its capital Paris which is the centre of the rich cultural heritage of the French. It contained beautiful and explicate pictures illustrating French greetings, language, food, dinning etiquette, and fashion. The girls also got to see famous tourist destinations in France. After the presentation, there was a quick game, followed by a quiz on kahoot.com. They had fun answering the different questions. Click here to see our winners.
