The Pearl club Spelling Bee competition
BACKGROUND AND AIM
Life is becoming a fast moving train and as individuals we tend to follow the disturbing pace. We unconsciously bury the salient principle of "a step at a time" and its undefeated ability to take us on an adventurous ride to our destined location.
Fortunately, man has been blessed with one of the greatest gifts, reading. Reading is one way in which we not only gather information, but also teach ourselves how to slow down.
When we slow down, we notice, and when we notice, we listen. When we listen, we practice sustained attention that gives us an upper hand in life.
In a bid to foster reading culture, The Pearl Club of Uzommiri Study Centre is organizing a spelling bee which will entail not just memorizing a list of words but reading for meaning.
The aim of this spelling bee is to expose girls to the adventurous world of books and remind them how fun reading can be.
. The
benefits of reading to an individual cannot be over emphasized. It cuts across
renewed academic vigour, improved concentration and focus, exercising the
brain, boosting one's confidence, improved analytical skills and most of all a
better perspective of life.
We would be working around the theme "Defense of human dignity: All men as brothers". In the light of the COVID-19 pandemic which brought many to the realization that “whatever affects one affects all” (Pope Francis).
we understand that the consciousness of brotherhood should be imbued in people from an early age. An age where acts of injustice, discrimination or any form of perceived ill treatment can leave a scar in the heart of a person which could haunt them in later life or make them into preyed predators as adults.
. Through this competition and the reading materials the contestants will be exposed to, which have been carefully selected to reflect the theme, we hope to get the youngsters to give more thought to treating other individuals with charity and defending the dignity of all men no matter their differences. Let us remember:" one book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world." —Malala Yousafzai.
