THE PEARL CLUB SPELLING BEE COMPETITION 2024

 


Background and Aim

In a world where Artificial Intelligence has become an indispensable tool, revolutionizing industries, solving complex problems, and even augmenting our daily lives in ways we could hardly have imagined, one may begin to wander if there’s any use for creativity or humanity. Actually, there is no need to pit these concepts against each other because artificial Intelligence stands as a testament to human innovation and ingenuity.

 

Human creativity is an expression of the dignity with which people have been endowed by the creator, and  when we deploy technological tools to make the earth a favorable dwelling, we engage in a creative act akin to that of God.

 

Reading exposes us to new worlds, ideas and perspectives. It has also in ways proved to be a way to simulate our creativity and imagination in ways that AI cannot replicate. 


In a bid to foster reading culture, The Pearl Club of Uzommiri Study Centre is organizing a spelling bee which will entail not just memorizing a list of words but reading for meaning. 

The aim of this spelling bee is to expose girls to the adventurous world of books and remind them of their unique capabilities as human beings 

The benefits of reading to an individual cannot be over emphasized. It cuts across renewed academic vigour, improved concentration and focus, exercising the brain, boosting one's confidence, improved analytical skills and most of all a better perspective of life. 

We would be working around the theme“The Human Factor : Human Creativity in the Face of Artificial Intelligence. While AI may excel in certain tasks and exhibit remarkable intelligence and creativity, it lacks the essence of humanity. Our capacity for empathy, intuition, emotional depth, and nuanced understanding of the human experience remain unparalleled.

 

Through this competition and the reading materials the contestants will be exposed to, which have been carefully selected to reflect the theme, we hope to get the youngsters to harness their creativity, empathy, and ingenuity, all of which constitutes to the uniqueness of our human person. Ultimately, having in mind that “depending on the inclination of the heart, everything within our reach becomes either an opportunity or a threat,” -Pope Francis.

Contestants will be expected to read the recommended texts,

Entry Requirements:

Contestants must be girls between ages 8 -10 years.

I do not want it to end yet…” _Camper, PVVC 2020 The PVVC Experience On August 1, 2020, Pearl Virtual Vacation Camp, the first-ever virtual summer camp organized by the Pearl Club, kicked off with over 40 campers, girls between ages 8 and 16, from across Nigeria, from Canada, England, and the USA.
