Theme: Building and Sustaining human relationships: Strengthening familial bonds

“What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family.” Mother Theresa

BACKGROUND

Family time is an essential factor that helps to create strong bonds, love, connections, and relationship among the family members. Spending quality time with family does help in coping with challenges, instilling a feeling of security, inculcating family values and filling kids with confidence.

Unfortunately, we have subconsciously given to habits that diminish connection and loosen strong bonds in the family. We could attribute this to technology and how fast the world is evolving. However, a better approach will be to keep up, while using these tools and other means to strengthen these bonds for “Family is not an important thing. It’s everything.” –Michael J. Fox

Every family member has a role to play in the way of being of a family, including the children. Children can contribute as much to the dynamics of the family as all other members, especially when properly inspired to do so or if helped to see the need. This will in turn help to create a healthy society since as Pope John XXIII puts it… “The family is the first essential cell of human society” and therefore a significant determinant of the outcome of the society. The home is the first school of a child, where virtues needed in later life are learned and practiced.

In the words of Confucius- “The strength of a nation derives from the integrity of the home.”

AIM

In organizing this competition, our aim is to foster in participants a strong sense of family, the desire to be better members of their own nucleus and to imbibe values which nourish this bond through the literature made available to them in the course of the competition and other activities organized by the centre in the course of the year. These tasks will also charge them to apply critical thinking and problem solving skills while honing their creative writing abilities.

In view of this, participants will be expected to reflect on the theme and how they contribute to the dynamics of their immediate families. The following questions could aid their reflection and provide insights:

Can they be counted on by their parents to support their families to the best of their abilities

Beyond the performance of tasks and chores, what are my roles in my family

Everyone has inherent gifts which they contribute to their environment. What are theirs and how do they help them take care of their family

How do children carrying out their responsibilities in the home judiciously including the seemingly minor tasks help to improve familial bonding

Are they able to identify certain family traditions or practices which may be absent or neglected in their families and proffer solutions which they can carry out themselves to improve them
