CHRONICLES OF THE VIRTUAL CAMP

Image
“When will camp be ending? Today? Why today? Why does camp have to end now? I do not want it to end yet…” _Camper, PVVC 2020 The PVVC Experience On August 1, 2020, Pearl Virtual Vacation Camp, the first-ever virtual summer camp organized by the Pearl Club, kicked off with over 40 campers, girls between ages 8 and 16, from across Nigeria, from Canada, England, and the USA. Planning the camp at a time like this, the time of an ongoing pandemic, was, one of the coordinators says, exciting and required a good measure of improvisation: "planning PVVC 2020 was exciting, I was part of a team of wonderful and diligent ladies. I'm grateful for all the pushes I got from my team members, really, and I thoroughly enjoyed all the seminars and get-togethers organized for us coordinators. I had a swell time with my tutees: some of them; I got moved by their innocence, simplicity, utter bluntness, and inquisitiveness. Oh! We got a lot of unexpected questions, *laughing*, questions you...

Obiagu is an urban slum in Enugu State, Nigeria.🏬 It was discovered that students there, especially young girls, despite going to public schools, still have low literacy and numeracy skills. ☹️ The Obiagu project which started in 2017 to combat this problem is a charity run by University students who frequent Uzommiri Study Centre.👩🏾‍🎓👩🏾‍🎓 They give weekly classes on basic literacy skills, mathematics, and vocational training to the girls at Obiagu. 👩🏾‍🏫👩🏾‍💻👩‍🍳👩‍🔬👩‍🎨👩‍🏭 This Read-a-thon, as stated earlier, is intended as a fundraiser to set up a library where these girls can have full and free access to study materials as well as to equip t...

CREATING A PURE LIFE FOR ALL

Image
The Earth. It is the only home we have come to know; it is home to about 7.8 billion people. It goes without saying, that we ought to take care of the Earth, preserve her resources and conserve energy. It is something that all hands have to be on deck to accomplish. Pope Francis in one of his encyclical, Laudato Si, wrote, “saving our common home is crucial for the youth because they will suffer the most from the consequences of climate change. So, as young people, you have to take ownership of your future.” We decided to give young people an opportunity to take ownership of their future by organizing a contest in this regard with the theme: Vida Pura Para Todos, meaning, Pure Life for All. The creativity contest which was organized for girls between the ages of 11 and 16 years, was divided into two categories: writing and art. It was aimed at enabling young girls to think about ways of solving environmental problems, fostering critical thinking, and improving self-expression. The...

PEARL ONLINE

The need for continual formation- academic, spiritual, and cultural has remained a foremost priority at Pearl Club of Uzommiri Study Centre.  That is why in spite of these unprecedented times, the idea of maximizing a virtual space to continue the regular Saturday club activities and the daily Guided Study Programme was not far-fetched. With the aid of various platforms that support e-learning such as whatsapp, Google classroom, zoom, and the support of the parents of the club who have always been our greatest champions in all situations, pearl online began. At first, the volunteers and coordinators of the club taught the girls mathematics and English via whatsapp, twice a week for about an hour. Then we gradually moved on to Google classroom as it offered more possibilities of providing the girls with study materials, occasional quizzes and extra-curriculars in the form of games and videos. The guided study programme was designed to run from Monday to Friday from 4pm to 6pm...

Going French

Image
There are many countries in the world we live in, each with its unique people and cultural values. While some of these countries are popular and well known for their cultural heritage: their language; their festivals and holidays; their food, some others are not so popular. Acculturation, which involves learning and adopting the behavioral pattern of a culture different from ours can be all fun and exciting which is why the Pearl Club had it as one of its weekly programmes. The aims of the exercise was to expose the girls to one of the richest and intriguing cultures of the world and its theme was " Going French ". The acculturation exercise ran for one week, ending with a grand finale that Saturday. AN AUGUST VISITOR IN FEBRUARY😲

Image
A recall on the events of the day of the Bishop’s visit, however vague, is enough to rouse a fuzzy warmth, the exact kind one gets from a warm blanket. Uzommiri Study Centre was indeed as warm that afternoon for His Lordship, Bishop Callistus Onaga, the bishop of Enugu diocese, on the event of his visit to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the founding of the women section of Opus Dei. We were all super excited: friends and visitors to the center and the girls of the Pearl Club, especially the girls of the Pearl Club. It is most likely that the girls of the pearl club already had in mind, the thought of doing something very special for the bishop. They took up the challenge to offer up 90 hours of study for his intentions and in line with the 90th anniversary of the women of Opus Dei. At first, the girls imagined that 90 hours of study would be too ambitious a task to take up. However, when they were given reasons as to why that would be really great a gift to give him, they s...
